Excavation in the deepest probe of Area AA has revealed that the history of occupation at Abila extends back to at least the Early Bronze Age, and possibly to the Chalcolithic and Neolithic periods. The pit was so deep thata long latter had to be used to descend into these early strata, where a wall and tabun (Arabic for oven) were discovered during the 1996 season.
