The three apses of the Area D basilica mark the eastern end of the structure. The apse housed the altar of the Eucharistic meal. It was not uncommon for early Christians to construct the apse over top of the grave of a Christian martyr. This is sometimes referred to as the martyrium. The apse was the central feature of the basilica and was separated from the sanctuary by an altar screen. |
