This beautiful Roman portrait is located on the wall of the NE side of the central chamber. The chamber contains three sarcophogi carved from the bedrock on each side. These adult-sized burial places were sealed originally with large cut boulders and then plastered over and painted with designs emulating bed coverings. The most striking feature is of this medallion, decorated with the portrait of a young woman whose coiffeur (hair style) or ringlets, three necklaces, and red colored garments confirm the affluence of her family. Below the medallion, in an extension of the plastered surface, a tabula ansata surmounts a painted pedestal. The three-line Greek inscription preserves only fragments of the admonition to be of good cheer and the indication that the woman was either 18 or 38 years of age.
