These carved figures represent fine Roman artistry. Above is an angel-type sphinx and below it is a male lion figure. These figures were carved into the wall on either side of the oval archway that leads into the southern chamber of the tomb. The maned male lions stand alert, facing the archway with their teeth and claws exposed, serving as guardians of the tomb.
